Moonshots of the 2020s

How to make the most of the missions of horizon europe?

This series of high-level events (by invitation, RSVP) addresses the future visions of Finnish universities regarding EU Research and Innovation Policy and Horizon Europe. These events will gather representatives of the European institutions, public sector, industry, and other stakeholders, to discuss the great global challenges of our time and their scientific solutions, together with researchers and academic leaders.

The Finnish education system is well-known worldwide. But Finland is also one of the leading countries in research excellence and innovation, and a forerunner in open science. Finnish high-quality university education is based on high-quality research, conducted in close interaction with the surrounding society. What are the solutions of Finnish universities to global challenges?

Universities Finland UNIFI, representing all Finnish universities, contributes to the discussion on the mission-oriented approach proposed for Horizon Europe. As a follow-up to the previously published position paper*, UNIFI, in cooperation with all Finnish universities and Finnish Regional Offices in Brussels, is now organising a series of events to highlight research and innovation priorities needed for bold European missions.

* Universities Finland UNIFI, representing all Finnish universities, has contributed ideas to the mission-oriented approach proposed for the next European Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon Europe (FP9).

The position paper builds upon Finland’s preliminary views on FP9, combining Finnish national priorities, research profiles of Finnish universities, and bottom-up proposals from the Finnish scientific community. The drafted paper is also in line with the European Union and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In the paper UNIFI proposes: 1. Key principles of a successful mission-oriented approach, and 2. Missions and research priorities contributing to the achievement of the overall goal.
